Ever wondered what Butterfly`s share your garden? Well now is the time to try and find out. The Big Butterfly Count is run by Butterfly Conservation and is a citizen science project that was launched in 2010. It aims at encouraging all of us to take a moment to appreciate nature and count what butterflies you can find, letting them know so they can map out populations across the UK. In 2020 over 111,500 people took part, submitting 145,249 counts of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK. This year the event runs from 16th July- 8th August.
In order to take part, you just need to take 15 minutes on a sunny day either in your garden or during a walk. Not sure what you’re looking at? Not to worry, Butterfly Conservation have provided some handy ID sheets which you can either download from their website or you can pick one up from Beaulieu Community Centre. If you taking part in your garden, you just need to record the most of one particular species you see at one time. If you’re out for a walk, it’s the total number of butterflies you see in 15 minutes.
As well as submitting your results online as part of the survey, we would also love to know how many species of butterfly you find and even better if you can provide us with any pictures. If you can’t ID a particular butterfly then grab a photo in and we will do our best to help.
We hope you enjoy getting involved and we will encourage everyone to get involved each year, that way we can start to see what the butterfly population is like over the years on the estate.
